Millis
Garden Club Celebrates 5 Years,
with Many Accomplishments
Millis, MA..The Millis Garden Club
is now celebrating its 5th year. Since its inception in September
2004, the club has dedicated itself to projects that beautify the town
of Millis. The Children’s Garden at Oak Grove Farm, the most
heartwarming project to date, was completed in June 2007. With
the support of our members and many volunteers from our community, MGC
installed a perennial garden designed to attract birds and butterflies. Located
adjacent to the new OGF Children’s Playground, we invite visitors
of all ages to explore the garden rooms and
the walking paths. The brick patio will lead visitors to comfortable
park benches set under a pergola made of Douglas Fir, recycled from the
original playground installed in 1990. On Friday, August 1, 2008,
Fox 25 TV broadcast live from this site when they aired the Morning News
during the Zip Trip to Millis 02054 event. Access to the MGC
Children’s Garden is at 410 Exchange Street, Route 115, Millis, at
the entrance to the historical Oak Grove Farm House, adjacent to the OGF
Soccer Fields.
Millis Garden Club also maintains 11 container gardens throughout our town, offering passersby four seasons of interest and beauty. The containers are located at the Millis Public Library, Veterans Memorial Building, Police/Fire Station, the traffic island at 109/Exchange St, and at the DPW office. Several traffic islands in Millis are planted with spring blooming daffodils, which is part of our Catch Our Drift Bulb Planting program, initiated in 2005. An upcoming project scheduled for Spring 2009 is MGC’s re-design of the Welcome to Millis traffic island. Fundraising for this project is currently in progress with the Red Sox Tickets Raffle, which will be drawn on Sat, September 13 at 3 pm at Millis Firemen’s Fall Festival, Town Park. Raffle tickets can be purchased in advance from members or at the event prior to the drawing.
Another MGC contribution to our community are passes to Tower Hill Botanical Gardens, Boylston, MA, which residents may enjoy all year round for free. Reserve and pick up entrance passes (for up to four people) by contacting the Millis Public Library at (508) 367-8282.
MGC begins its 2008-2009 season with a Kick Off-Open Meeting on Wednesday, September 17, 7-8 pm at Veterans Memorial Building, 900 Main Street, Room 18. At this informal program/meeting, Members and Guests will share garden tips and experiences learned over the summer. If you have an interest in gardening and wish to learn more, or want to help beautify our town while meeting new people, please consider attending our first meeting of the year. This program is free and open to the public.
